EU DELEGATION TO MOLDOVA CONCERNED ABOUT NON-IMPLEMENTATION OF COURT OF APPEALS' RULING ON COMMUNIST REFORMIST PARTY

21 november, 2014

The Delegation of the European Union to Moldova is concerned about the non-implementation of the Court of Appeals' ruling suspending the Justice Ministry's decision to register the Communist Reformist Party with very similar symbols with the Party of Communists.

In an interview with Infotag, the Ambassador of the EU Delegation to Moldova, Pirkka Tapiola, said that “the issue has been discussed by all ambassadors of the EU member states in Chisinau who expressed concern about the non-implementation of the decision of the Court of Appeals”.

“This is a question of rule of law and of implementation of judicial acts,” Pirkka Tapiola said.

Tapiola noted that the EU Delegation is closely following the case and expressed hope that the Moldovan authorities will respect the electoral legislation.

Infotag’s dossier: On November 4, 2014, the Court of Appeals ruled to suspend the decision by the Ministry of Justice to register the Communist Reformist Party whose symbol (hammer, ear and star) is very similar with the symbol of the Party of Communists (hammer, sickle and book). Based on the Court of Appeals ruling, the Party of Communists asked the Central Electoral Commission (CEC) to withdraw the Communist Reformist Party from the electoral campaign for the November 30 parliamentary election. The CEC has not yet reacted to the Court of Appeals' ruling.
