LIBERAL DEMOCRATS AND DEMOCRATS WILL SUPPORT IURIE LEANCA FOR PREMIER

28 january, 2015

The Liberal Democratic Party and Democratic Party will support the candidacy of Iurie Leanca for prime minister, the two parties’ leaders Vlad Filat and Marian Lupu stated to the press following their consultations held with Moldovan President Nicolae Timofti on Tuesday.

Filat stated that Leanca is the party’s only candidate, so the Liberal Democrats did not and are not considering any other candidature.

“To appoint a new government, it is necessary to have a simple majority in parliament [51 MPs in the 101-member legislature]. Negotiations ought to be held not only with the Communists [MCP] but also with the Liberals [LP]. As we promised before, we have nominated a candidate for premier. Now it’s up to the Parliament to act further to form a new government”, said Vlad Filat.

Marian Lupu stated the Democrats will support any candidate from the LDP.

“According to the AEM formation agreement, the Liberal Democratic Party is supposed to nominate a candidate for prime minister. The Liberal Democrats did not indicate us whom we should appoint as speaker of parliament. So, we shall not be indicating them anything, either. President Timofti today asked our opinion about Mr. Leanca, and our reply was positive”, said Lupu.

He underlined, however, that the two AEM parties need other deputies’ backing, and that the LDP and DP “have a lot of arguments in Leanca’s favor”.

Marian Lupu refrained from mentioning the names of ministers from the Democratic Party, saying “we haven’t discussed them yet”.
