IURIE LEANCA CONSIDERS FOUNDING A PARTY

26 february, 2015

Moldova’s former Prime Minister Iurie Leanca says he is not ruling out completely the possibility of establishing a political party of his own because “I just hardly imagine my further presence in the Liberal Democratic Party”, where he is still a de-jure First Deputy Chairman.

In his interview with Radio France International Romania, Leanca said that, actually, he would certainly like the Liberal Democratic Party of Moldova to be reformed from the inside, but “my experience of the past year is making me skeptical about the possibility of such an enterprise”.

“I think that many rank and file Liberal Democrats would like a purification and revival of the party. But a part of the LDPM leadership is against changes. May be they have got used to having what they have, or they have certain commitments. A dictated unanimity makes me skeptical about the possibility of pluralism of opinions in a party”, said Iurie Leanca.

He promised to take a decision about his political future in the nearest time.

As for his relationship with LDPM Chairman Vlad Filat, the ex-premier said that he used to have “collegial relations” with him lately, “and even friendly relations, when Filat was a premier and I was a foreign minister”.

“Unfortunately, our relationship changed upon my appointment as a prime minister because we have differing opinions on the role played by some state agencies in the country. Now Filat also wants to know what decision I will take, and apparently our relations will undergo another change. I want us to have collegial relations, and I hope we will be united at least by a common desire to change Moldova to the better”, said Iurie Leanca.

Touching on the Chiril Gaburici Government, Leanca said, “This minority government is the result of a very strange construction”.

“It is a silent coalition of two pro-European parties with the Communists. I regard it to be incapable. We live in an extremely turbulent, explosive region, and we can’t know what may happen next. Things in eastern Ukraine are not improving. We can’t ignore the jeopardy of the conflict spreading towards southern Ukraine, i.e. closer to our borders. Our economy has already suffered due to a trade embargo, regional crisis and problems that require surgical interference, not a cosmetic one. I think that in such conditions, it is dangerous to have a minority government that is supported – on certain conditions – by the non-reformed Communist Party that changes its rhetoric, but not actions”, said Iurie Leanca.

In his opinion, “It is just an illusion that a minority government can be effective. Its formation was a mistake. Personally I expect stagnation in Moldova, and not approximation with the European Union”.

Leanca believes that responsibility for the failure to form a coalition between the Liberal Democratic Party, Democratic Party and Liberal Party and a pro-European coalition government must be shared and borne by all the three parties.

“All of them demonstrated their being not flexible. That’s why I brought apologizes to voters upon realizing that their expectations will not come true. In its election campaign, the Liberal Democratic Party made a pro-European and anti-communist message. So it is hard to explain its current union with the Communist Party”, said Iurie Leanca.

Infotag’s dossier: At 12.30 hrs on Thursday, Iurie Leanca began his press briefing in Infotag, at which he may state his secession from the Liberal Democratic Party and the launching of his own political project.
