30 march, 2015

The Party of Socialists (PSRM), having the largest faction of 25 in the 101-member Parliament of Moldova, challenged with the Constitutional Court on Friday the deputies’ decision to hold behind closed doors the March 24 plenary meeting of the forum convened to hear the report prepared by the parliamentary ad hoc commission that had investigated the situation developing in the Moldovan banking sector.

PSRM Chairman Igor Dodon stated at submitting documents to the Court that the decision concerned went contrary to the Constitution article stipulating transparency at considering questions of public significance.

“It is impermissible to conceal from citizens the information that directly concerns them. The latest developments in the banking sector, speculations on the hard-currency market and embezzlements worth billions of lei at Banca de Economii a Moldovei (BEM), Banca Sociala and Unibank must become fully known by the public”, stated Igor Dodon.

In his words, “the secret parliament meeting” was convened to conceal the truth and prevent the public from learning the names of the people who stole public money worth about a billion euros equivalent from the three banks.

In the result of the closed hearings, which lasted 8 hours ending after 10 pm, a parliamentary majority dismissed National Commission for Financial Market Chairman Artur Gherman and Vice-President of the National Bank of Moldova Emma Tabarta. The commission’s report was not presented to the wide public, but the ruling coalition leaders stated they would publish the document within 30 days.
