16 june, 2015

The Liberal Democratic Party and Democratic Party have received the largest number of ballots at the first round of the local elections held on June 14.

According to the Central Election Commission, the Liberal Democrats have won mayoral elections in 181 populated areas of Moldova [cities, towns and villages], and the Democrats – in 147 localities.

The Communist Party has received 31 mandates of mayors, the Party of Socialists – 22 mandates, the Liberal Party – 13, the voting bloc “European People’s Platform of Moldova (EPPM) – Iurie Leanca” – 7, Our Party – 2 mandates, and Ravnopraviye [Equal Rights] Socio-Political Movement – 1 mandate. At the first round, mayoral elections were won by 34 independent candidates.

The first round provided the heads of 438-of-968 Moldovan populated areas. In ten of them, candidates polled 100% ballots, though in all of the 10 localities there was only one candidate running.

In 458 localities, a second round of elections will be held on June 28 because none of candidates there was able to receive more than 50% votes at the first round. Two localities – Ulmu Village (Ialoveni Raion) and Topala village (Cimislia Raion) – will hold a repeated voting. The thing is, in Ulmu the voter turnout was below the minimum necessary level of 25%, and in Topala the voting process was suspended due to a scuffle that broke out in the polling station there.

In two weeks’ time, mayors will be elected in a number of important localities such as Chisinau, Comrat, Vulcanesti, Edinet and some other.
