LEFT PARTIES BLOCK CHISINAU'S MAIN STREET

12 octomber, 2015

On Monday morning, the activists and supporters of the Party of Socialists and Our Party blockaded Bulevardul Stefan cel Mare near the Parliament Building with a long Renault truck. As a result, the city’s main street, one of the busiest here, got paralyzed.

Within a very short time, hundreds of trapped cars and public transport vehicles flooded the city center paralyzing, in turn, traffic in several crossing streets. Thousands of citizens had to reach their work and study places with great difficulties, spending much more time than usual first on waiting and wondering what all that could be and than on long walks.

The Parliament Building itself has been surrounded with two police cordons, the outer one formed of young police officers dressed in the uniforms of task force units. And the inner cordon, stationed directly before the entrance top the building, is equipped with shields and other equipment for defending the strategic-importance object. The entire police activity is being coordinated on the site personally by Minister of the Interior Oleg Balan, who refused to make whatever comments for journalists.

Unlike him, Party of Socialists (PSRM) Chairman MP Igor Dodon said to the press that the PSRM/OP tent camp [set up before the Parliament yet on September 27] was searched by the police on Sunday.

“They came with their dogs and said they were looking for bombs, weapons and drugs. Naturally, they found nothing. Really, where could such stuff appear in our tents from, if the cops themselves had no possibility to plant it”, said the politician with a smile.

Infotag’s dossier: Along with this PSRM/OP encampment, there is yet another analogous township situated a few hundred meters off the place – in the city’s central square since September 6. All in all, there is about one thousand tents in both camps that are preparing in earnest to winter protesting. Both are demanding dismissal of the president, parliament and government and the holding of an early parliamentary election.
