ION PADURARU REFUSES TO STAND FOR PRIME MINISTER

15 january, 2016

The Secretary General of the Presidential Chancellery Office, Ion Paduraru, appointed by President Timofti as candidate for prime minister shorter than 24 hours before, has announced he is declining the flattering offer.

He said at a press briefing in the Presidential Office today that on Friday morning President Timofti showed him a Declaration, signed by 55 deputies of the [101-seat] Parliament of Moldova, reading that the parliamentary majority has nominated its own candidate for premier.

“In such a situation, when there is an officially existing parliamentary majority and another candidate appointed by it, I don't regard it reasonable to hold negotiations with lawmakers concerning forming a government. I don't think it would be correct to start a struggle between two candidates. So, I stated to the President my resignation as a candidate. At the moment, I am no candidate already”, said Paduraru.

He thinks that if only the other candidate [Filip] had not been nominated on January 14, there would have been a risk of dissolution of the Parliament “because I actually had no chances for appointment as prime minister”.

As already reported by Infotag, at about 10 pm on Thursday President Timofti decreed to appoint Ion Paduraru as candidate. On Friday morning, however, the leading force in the Moldovan Parliament – the Democratic Party – presented a documentary re-confirmation that the parliamentary majority of 55 MPs really existed, and that it had put forward its candidate –incumbent Minister of Informational and Telecommunication Technologies Pavel Filip.
