NEW GOVERNMENT STATES ITS FIRM “NO” TO EARLY ELECTION, PREMIER FILIP SAYS

27 january, 2016

The new Government of Moldova says its firm “no” to early parliamentary election, Prime Minister Pavel Filip stated in the course of his meeting with Moldovan raion [district] chairpersons on Wednesday.

“When these actions of protest began in Chisinau, they were sincere because they were based on citizens’ demands to solve economic and social problems. I regarded them to be not only legitimate but also useful. They should have promoted the Government’s mobilization to hard work and to putting all political differences aside. By now, however, the situation has changed, and the protesters are demanding nothing but an early election”, said the prime minister.

Filip believes this is “a totally unrightful demand, as there are no legal grounds for demanding this”.

“To hold an election, the country needs to have corresponding conditions, but there are no such conditions now. Besides this, an early election will throw the country into a chaos and will only aggravate the crisis. An election may lead to a critical economic and financial degradation, which will be hard to overcome”, stressed the premier.

He told the regional leaders that the new parliamentary majority consists of “the most responsible deputies, who have made this for the sake of preventing an early election”.

“The new Government is the last chance for the current political class. We are firmly determined to work effectively and act without any populism. The Government shall not be a platform for political discussions. There is a multitude of problems requiring our immediate attention. We realize all this, like we realize that the only instrument for restoring citizens’ and foreign partners’ trust is our efficient, productive work”, stated Pavel Filip.
