PARLIAMENT DECLINES ALL OPPOSITION’S PROPOSALS CONCERNING BANK FRAUD INVESTIGATION

21 july, 2016

On Thursday, the Moldovan parliamentary majority habitually voted down all the opposition Socialist faction’s demands to hold hearings concerning the theft of a billion euros from Moldovan banks.

In particular, the Socialists demanded to hear the Prosecutor General, Minister of the Interior, Directors of the National Anti-Corruption Center and of the Information and Security Service, and to adopt the Parliament’s Political Declaration on the “theft of the century”.

“We are not going to interfere into the work of the investigation agencies. But deputies of parliament have the right to know how the investigation of the bank fraud is advancing. We can see some deputies’ attempts to lay this huge bank debt onto citizens’ shoulders by converting the stolen billion euros into a state debt to be repaid by all taxpayers. You are already preparing to consider such a conversion bill in parliament. But we want to know what is being done to return the stolen billion and to punish thieves”, stated Socialist Vladimir Turcan.

MP Iurie Tap, LD, reminded that according to the law, the Prosecutor General must present work reports in parliament minimum once a year.

“We can’t see any reason for violating this legal provision by the nation’s supreme jurist. If you are refusing to obey to the law, then your governance is not transparent and you have things to conceal”, stated Iurie Tap.

Despite all arguments and demands by the opposition, the parliamentary majority voted for their own plenary agenda, dismissing all the opposition’s proposals.
