ACTIUNEA 2012 HOLDS UNIREA ACTION IN BUCHAREST

24 octomber, 2016

A march called “Struggle for Bessarabia!” was held in Bucharest on October 22. It was organized by the Civil Platform “Actiunea 2012”, uniting a number of Moldovan and Romanian non-governmental organizations supporting the idea of unification [Unirea] of the two countries, and continuing its actiunea [action] started nearly five years ago.

Organization leaders wrote in the social networks that unirea supporters, including from Moldova, set up tents in the University Square in Bucharest and are demanding from Romanian political parties to put the unification project into life.

The demonstrators marched along Bucharest streets last Saturday. When they reached the Victory Square and stopped before the Government Building, the Romanian police detained 5 people for public order violation, including Actiunea leader George Simion. All of them were fined 3,000 Romanian lei (almost 700 euros) each, after which they were set free.

Simion wrote in the social networks on Monday morning that the demonstrators had received replies from 6-of-7 Romanian political parties to which they addressed concerning the unirea project. The marchers are continuing to be present in the square.

According to organizers, the unirea march and action gathered 8-10 thousand people, including Moldovan parliamentarians, ministers of government and supporters of the Liberal Party of Moldova, whose leader MP Mihai Ghimpu is currently running for President of Moldova.

Ex-President of Romania Traian Basescu came to the square to talk to the demonstrators and stated that Romania should establish a ministry of unification.

“Romania will only win from the possible unification with Moldova in what concerns the population and territory growth, and will become one of the strongest agricultural countries in Europe. It is necessary to establish a ministry of unification that will embark on realization of the idea in earnest. Sooner or later, the unification shall take place! Much will depend on the Parliament of Moldova”, stated Basescu.

According to him, one of the steps to speed up the unirea process could be the using of the Romanian Leu currency in the Republic of Moldova.

Infotag’s dossier: Actiunea 2012 organized such actions many times in Chisinau, too. And Simion was deprived of the right to enter Moldova for anti-state slogans and for calls to unification with Romania.
