PLAHOTNIUC SENDS EU AND USA SIGNAL OF MOLDOVA’S ALLEGIANCE TO EUROPEAN COURSE

27 octomber, 2016

Vlad Plahotniuc has sent to the European Union and the United States a signal that for the sake of continuing the European course, the Moldovan authorities are ready for everything – up to withdrawing their presidential candidate from elections to thus ensure support to the pro-European candidate – Maia Sandu, believes the Director of the www.ava.md informational-analytical portal and of the Institute for Effective Policies, Chisinau political scientist Vitaly Andrievsky.

He stated in an interview to Infotag that by this decision Plahotniuc has made a synonymous choice in favor of the European Union, having decided that the Democratic Party’s presidential candidate, Marian Lupu, should rather quit the presidential campaign in Sandu’s favor.

“The Democrats had doubts concerning Lupu’s ability to defeat Igor Dodon in the second round of voting. To ensure Lupu’s reaching the second round, they should have worked more actively in rural localities, where Maia Sandu is not so well known. But there existed the risk that pro-Europe voters could refuse to vote for Lupu in the second round. Meanwhile, the supporters of candidate Dmitry Ciubasenco of Our Party would definitely vote for Igor Dodon in the second round”, said Vitaly Andrievsky.

In his words, now the Democratic Party has thrown the opposition forces to loggerheads.

“By doing so, the Democrats have thus got that very “golden share”, which they will use after the 2018 parliamentary elections, when the DP will be free to decide whom to form a ruling majority with – Maia Sandu’s party or with Dodon’s Party of Socialists”, said the expert.

Asked by Infotag if it was Plahotniuc’s own decision or he was recommended from abroad to act so, Andrievsky said that the variant of Lupu’s withdrawal in favor of a pro-European candidate was one of the main ones discussed by the Democrats.

In his words, this variant is interesting from different points of view – first and foremost because it is reducing the probability of massive protesting as a result of the clash of interests of the two opposition camps – the Right and Left oppositions.

Vitaly Andrievsky says that by removing Lupu, the ruling majority’s Executive Coordinator Vlad Plahotniuc has demonstrated to Brussels and Washington that the Moldovan authorities are doing their utmost for preserving the country’s European course.

“But should Dodon win in the second round, the Democratic Party and its de-facto leader Vlad Plahotniuc will have all grounds to state to the foreigners with clean conscience that “We did everything we only could not to let this happen”” said Vitaly Andrievsky.

The Institute of Public Policies (IPP) Program Director, political analyst and ex-parliamentarian Oazu Nantoi is less optimistic about the Democrats’ decision.

“I presume that Vlad Plahotniuc, who is coming across financial problems, has scrutinized the findings of recent opinion polls and knows voters’ preferences quite well. As a result, he had no option except withdrawing his candidate Lupu from the play. I guess this was done to avoid shame at the election”, said Oazu Nantoi.

“Now, a big question is rising: how will voters behave in the new conditions? The thing is, everybody in this republic knows very well that absolutely everything what Plahotniuc only touches or has even a slightest relation to is doomed to failure or annihilation. So it is not clear how voters will react to such a step by the Democrats”, said the expert.
