COMMUNISTS CONCERNED ABOUT NATO BUREAU OPENING, DEMAND A PARLIAMENTARY HEARING

01 december, 2016

The Moldovan Communist Party (MCP) has expressed its “deep concern” about the Tuesday’s signing, by Prime Minister Pavel Filip, of the agreement on the opening of a NATO Bureau in Chisinau. The MCP is demanding to hold an open-door parliamentary hearing on this serious issue.

The parliamentary MCP faction issued a statement on Wednesday claiming that being a constitutionally neutral state the Republic of Moldova may not hold a political dialog with a military bloc.

“There is NATO Information and Documentation Center working in Chisinau for many years by now. Moldova is a full-fledged participant in the NATO Partnership for Peace Program. For a neutral state, this has always been quite enough. It can be seen with the naked eye that the opening of NATO’s “small office” means a higher-than-previous level of relationship and cooperation with the North Atlantic Alliance. This seriously contradicts to the constitutional provision on the country’s permanent neutrality”, believe the Communists.

They wonder who has invested the Prime Minister with the authority to sign such a questionable document. As Pavel Filip regularly repeats, Moldova is a parliamentary republic in which the Government is accountable to the Parliament, “but the legislature has never discussed the signature question”.

The MCP faction further wrote that “seeking to restore the Western masters’ trust undermined by thefts and corruption, the Moldovan authorities are ready to again sacrifice the fundamental provisions of the RM Constitution”.

“Last 7 years, we have watched consistent steps to discredit the Main Law by the Constitutional Court and by other state institutions, including the Parliament and Government. This is a real creeping constitutional coup aimed at liquidation of the country’s neutrality and may be even its statehood”, said the MCP statement.

The Communist faction expressed a resolute protest against the thoughtless actions by the Government and its Head Pavel Filip, “who are jeopardizing not only the wholeness of the Constitution but also the very perspective of restoration of the country’s territorial integrity”.

“We have no doubt that opponents to Moldova’s reintegration in Chisinau, Tiraspol and Bucharest are applauding to Pavel Filip today”, wrote the Communists.

Infotag’s dossier: The Moldovan Parliament voted for opening of a NATO Bureau in Chisinau in July 2016. That parliamentary Resolution was promptly promulgated by President Nicolae Timofti and published in the Monitorul Oficial governmental bulletin i.e. it came into effect.
