UNIONISTS RALLY IN BRUSSELS DEMANDING UNIFICATION

02 december, 2016

Several hundred unionists [adherents to the idea of Unire – Moldova’s unification with Romania] organized a manifestation under the walls of the European Parliament Building in Brussels on Romania’s National Day of December 1 under the slogan of “One nation, one country!”

According to its organizers from the Civil Platform “Actiunea 2012”, uniting a number of Moldovan and Romanian non-governmental organizations supporting the idea of unification of the two countries, the demonstrators from both sides of the Prut [border river separating Romania and the Republic of Moldova] were chanting demands in support of unification and waved posters written in various languages, reading “Moldova is Romania”, “Unification”, “National Unity”, “No to border along the Prut!”. The unionists presented to the deputies the book entitled “Bessarabia. Unknown to the West” written by Sergiu Ion Chirca.

Actiunea 2012 began preparation for the action well in advance, and organized a bus voyage for all willing people from Chisinau to Brussels from November 29 to December 4.

As the local tradition goes, on December 1 unionist forces in Moldova were particularly active, too. Several hundred activists and supporters of the unionist association “Honor, Dignity and Motherland” (ODIP) unfolded a 1-km-long Romanian tricolor across the Chisinau's main square and along the city’s main street and marched several blocks along the street chanting incessantly “Bessarabia is a Romanian land”, “Chisinau and Bucharest are two Romanian hearts”, “Long live Moldova, Transylvania and the Romanian State”, “Unification!” etc.

This year, the manifestation in Chisinau was particularly noisy perhaps because president-elect Igor Dodon has stated a firm intention to struggle against unionism i.e. against those who are working to liquidate the statehood of the Republic of Moldova.
