EU DOES NOT BELIEVE MOLDOVA AND GIVES MINIMUM OF MONEY FOR THE ONLY SAKE OF PREVENTING SOCIAL UPHEAVAL – MAIA SANDU

07 february, 2017

Decision-makers in the European Union do not believe Moldova and provide a minimum of funding to underpin the population and prevent citizens’ accumulating of debts, Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS) Chairperson Maia Sandu stated on the ProTV Chisinau channel on Monday night.

In her opinion, “Brussels understands that Igor Dodon has come to power thanks to [Democratic Party Chairman] Vlad Plahotniuc, and Brussels understands their game”.

In her belief, the money which the European Union allocates to Moldova is that very minimum necessary for preventing real problems with repayment of salaries.

“EU officials realize that nobody is going to fulfill the commitments Moldova has undertaken, and that all changes and reforms will remain statements on the paper. But the most horrible thing is that Moldova may become a buffer zone between the West and the East, so the European Union will be giving some money only to let people survive. The West prefers to maintain minimal relations with Moldova rather than to leave the republic to itself. In the West, everybody understands that neither the Moldovan Government nor the Moldovan Parliament can be trusted”, stated the former Minister of Education.

Maia Sandu is convinced that Dodon wants to struggle not against Plahotniuc or corruption but against the EU-Moldova Association Agreement.

“How can Dodon struggle against the corrupt system if he is a part of the system? His irresponsible statements against the European Union – that after the Association Agreement signing the situation in the country has not improved – may lead to his hearing sharp words into his address while in Brussels”, said Maia Sandu, who believes that Moldova needs to maintain relations both with Russia and the European Union – without sacrificing the Association Agreement.

In her belief, the recent presidential election demonstrated that a critical mass of people wishing changes has appeared in the country.

“It is necessary to implement these changes by bringing professional, honest and incorruptible politicians into power. I and my party colleagues have been lately spending much time in Moldovan localities, where we are forming local PAS organizations. People must have a hope that the situation in the country can yet improve. If there is a demand, there must be an offer. We must prove that we can make such an offer to change the situation in the country for the better”, stated Maia Sandu.
