LIBERAL PARTY SHALL NOT SUPPORT ELECTORAL SYSTEM CHANGE – MIHAI GHIMPU

24 february, 2017

The parliamentary Liberal Party shall not support the initiative on changing the electoral system in Moldova, LP Chairman Mihai Ghimpu stated on the TVC-21 channel on Thursday night. He admitted that, really, this question is being actively discussed in the republic, but the Parliament Bureau has not yet received whatever legislative initiative in this regard.

“This is a very serious question requiring an all-round scrutiny and domestic and international expert examination. Nobody will rush to changing the electoral system just because somebody desires this. And there shall be no snap election, either. The next ordinary parliamentary election will be held at the end of 2018 by using the proportional electoral system currently in force”, stated Mihai Ghimpu.

The Liberal explained that his poor result at the recent presidential election [1.8%] was “because I was talking truth, and not the honey voters wanted to enjoy”.

“I did not go in for populism. I did not promise what would never happen. There is no Soviet Union and will never be, and I was saying this directly. Igor Dodon won the election because he was telling fairy tales to voters. If the people further believe in such tales, they will further live badly. Dodon won also thanks to the ‘nets of nostalgia’ he set. One should not forget that there still is a considerable proportion of nostalgic people in Moldova who want back into the USSR and Russia”, said the Liberal leader.

In his opinion, the road to the presidential post was paved for Dodon also by Filat and Shor as well as by those who embezzled the billion euros.

Ghimpu voiced confidence that his Liberal Party will necessarily be present in the next Parliament.

“We have committed neither sins nor mistakes. We did not steal the billion. We are criticized for our forming a governing coalition with the [Plahotniuc’s] Democratic Party. But this coalition was and is absolutely necessary. Thanks to it, the country has achieved stability. European partners are smiling to us and trust us. And the citizenry is beginning to comprehend that the situation is changing for the better. I do not believe to opinion polls that show our low popularity rating. I can also order opinion researches that will show that all Russians and Gagauzes in Moldova stand up for unification with Romania”, stated Mihai Ghimpu.
