PRESIDENT DODON DEMANDS FROM USA AND ROMANIAN AMBASSADORS NOT TO INTERFERE INTO PRESIDENT’S ACTIVITIES

27 february, 2017

Moldovan President Igor Dodon has demanded from the United States Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Republic of Moldova, James D. Pettit, and Romanian Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Daniel Ionita not to interfere into the President’s activities.

The Internet publication independent.md published Dodon’s reply to the diplomats, who had sent a joint letter to him, which the publication also published. In it, James D. Pettit and Daniel Ionita expressed regret that the President, as the country’s Supreme Commander-in-Chief, did not permit the Moldovan military to take part in the international field exercise going on at the Smardan training center in the Galati region of Romania. The event has gathered multinational forces from the United States, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Montenegro, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia and Ukraine.

James D. Pettit and Daniel Ionita blamed Igor Dodon for “unfriendly behavior” and warned that because of his gesture the Moldovan army will not receive a due training, while the training is 80% based on participation in such exercises. The diplomats promised not to make public their letter and underscored that this gesture by the head of state does not correspond to the commitments and efforts which the United States and Romania undertake to consolidate the institutional capacities of Moldovan state institutions.

In his reply letter, which Dodon also promised not to make public but it somehow got into the press, the President reminded to the diplomat in a stiff manner that Moldova is a independent and sovereign state and that the presidential office regards as unacceptable whatever comments or lecturing from the outside concerning its activities or decisions taken”.

“I request you not to teach the President how he should act, particularly in what concerns his constitutional plenary powers as well as in other spheres. I don't really think that in your countries a foreign ambassador may dare comment on the actions by your Presidents, particularly what concerns the dislocation of armed forces. I would like to see the reaction of the White House or the Cotroceni [presidential palace in Bucharest] on such kind of comments made e.g. by Moldovan ambassadors in Washington or Bucharest”, stated Igor Dodon.
