PRESIDENT DODON REGARDS DEMOCRATS’ DE-IMMUNIZATION IDEA AS INSTRUMENT OF BLACKMAIL

21 march, 2017

Moldovan President Igor Dodon regards the Democratic Party’s legislative initiative to abolish the parliamentary immunity as such as an instrument of political blackmail and pressing on lawmakers.

Commenting on the DP’s new political enterprise on his Facebook page, Igor Dodon wrote that the purpose of this initiative is absolutely clear: the de-immunization will permit the Democratic Party to be more “convincing” in negotiations with its ruling coalition partners.

“Besides this, the Government will receive the possibility to intimidate opposition deputies with initiation of criminal litigations and will thus “neutralize” them. By manipulating the DP-obedient Information and Security Service, Prosecution Service and police, the Government can be inventing new criminal litigations every night to make a short thrift of opposition representatives”, wrote the head of state.

In his belief, by launching this new initiative, the Democrats are counting also on influencing the President.

“By attacking Socialist MPs with framed-up litigations, the Democrats want to make me more obedient and tolerable towards their anti-social and erroneous geopolitical projects”, believes the President.

Dodon drew attention to an essential circumstance: the de-immunization will not affect the Democrats in any way because the Prosecution Service and other law enforcement agencies will never dare to investigate into the Democrats’ activities or shady schemes.

“That’s why de-immunization may not be approved presently as it is totally pointless at the moment. I believe it is only after the next parliamentary election that we can consider the said bill in earnest. When citizens’ trust in state institutions grows and when the institutions come to be free of whatever political control, only then the abolishing of parliamentary immunity will have a sense. Presently, however, politics is dominating over everything in this country. The state power is in the hands of the Democrats, but there is no genuine democracy in Moldova. In the state where the law is nothing but a servant to the political leadership, the cancellation of parliamentary immunity is impermissible”, believes President Igor Dodon.
