REFERENDUM TO COST AROUND 75 MILLION – CEC

30 march, 2017

Nearly 75 million lei will be necessary for holding the President-proposed consultative referendum, maintains the Central Election Commission.

The Commission did not yet receive the presidential decree on conducting the consultation referendum signed on March 28. The CEC conducted an approximate calculation, given the experience and the number of voters at presidential elections.

“As the decree does not include the date of document entry into force, it will start acting after the document publication in the Monitorul Oficial governmental bulletin. After that, the CEC may start procedures of organizing and conducting referendum. The CEC will approve the estimation of expenditures and will submit it to the Government for identifying financial resources”, the CEC said.

CEC members maintain that there is enough time for getting ready for the referendum.

“The legislation implies the appointment of the date of referendum for not later than 60 days before the day of its conducting. In this way, the CEC has enough time to approve the calendar plan of activities for preparing and conducting the referendum”, the CEC representative said.

Announcing about the appointing consultative referendum, President Igor Dodon said he provided enough time for preparing it – almost 6 months,. According to him, the time is necessary that the Government to find means for referendum, the Parliament to introduce amendments to the State Budget, Diaspora representatives to get properly registered , as well as to have 60 days for conducting the campaign on discussing issues, proposed for referendum.
