DEMOCRATS REGARD DODON’S INITIATIVE TO BE POLITICAL TRICK AND WILL BE INSISTING ON SINGLE-MANDATE SYSTEM

19 april, 2017

The Democratic Party of Moldova regards the legislative initiative of President Igor Dodon on transit to the mixed electoral system to be but a political trick, reads the DP statement issued on Tuesday.

The Democrats expressed regret that President Igor Dodon and the Party of Socialists do not regard as necessary their taking part in the ongoing “constructive dialog” on this question.

“They stood up with their initiative only upon seeing that there is a substantial number of votes in the Parliament for changing the electoral system, and that a consensus has appeared in the civil society on the issue”, said the document.

The Democrats believe the political trick is but the Socialists’ attempt to prevent voting on the introduction of the single-mandate system, to distract the public attention, and to stir up a mess in the society.

“The Democratic Party believes that only voting in one-mandate constituencies will ensure citizens’ full control over the deputies of the would-be Parliament, and this has become apparent at the numerous meetings we have held on various platforms last month”, said the statement.

The Democrats also said that they have unfolded a broad information campaign on voting in one-mandate constituencies, and have collected nearly a million citizens’ signatures in support of the transition. With an account of remarks and proposals heard during the debates across the country, the bill authors have already introduced changes into their text, and stand ready to make further changes.
