EU OFFICIAL CALLS MOLDOVA TO MEET ASSOCIATION COMMITMENTS

20 april, 2017

Brussels is not against Moldova's approximation with the Eurasian Economic Union (EAES), but insists that Chisinau must meet its commitments within the EU-Moldova Association Agreement, European External Action Service (EEAS) official representative Nabila Massrali stated on Wednesday.

She called the Moldovan authorities to abide by trade agreements with the European Union, despite the policy aimed at approximation with Moscow waged by President Igor Dodon.

“Commitments before the European Union within the Association Agreement are no obstacle to political or economic relations with other partners and, in particular, with neighboring countries. On the contrary, we support this”, said the European Union official.

Earlier this month, President Dodon signed a memorandum of cooperation with EAES and convinced the Union’s member country presidents to grant observer status to Moldova.

Nabila Massrali said in this connection: “The European Commission has taken notice of the EAES countries’ decision to grant the observer status in that Organization. The Moldovan authorities should determine their relationship with it. At the same time, we are expecting that Moldova, like other countries having commitments before the European Union, will ensure full realization of their Association Agreements and agreements on free trade zone that should bring considerable advantages to Moldova population”.

As already reported by Infotag, President Dodon believes it is optimum for Moldova to be friends with the West as well as with the East. He regards the Eurasian Economic Union of Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Armenia and Kyrgyzstan as an alternative to the European Union and as a more advantageous market for Moldova-made goods.

However, the Moldovan Parliament and Government have stated they will not support the President’s initiative on approximation with EAES and will not ratify the documents he has signed.
