PRESIDENT CONGRATULATES CITIZENS ON NATIONAL FLAG DAY

27 april, 2017

President Igor Dodon has congratulated the citizens of Moldova on the occasion of the National Flag Day marked on April 27. The congratulation was published on the official presidential website.

“The legitimization on April 27, 1990 of the Flag – the first official symbol – crowned the Republic of Moldova’s efforts and wish to get firmly established on the world political arena as a democratic state based on the principles of respect for human rights and freedoms. Today we are celebrating also our National Emblem – the symbol of the Republic of Moldova dating back yet in the 14th century and expressing the heraldic and spiritual succession of the [medieval] Principality of Moldova”, said the presidential congratulation.

Igor Dodon further wrote that state symbols play an essential role in the upbringing and strengthening of the feeling of social unity, and they promote the consolidation of the idea of people’s belonging to the society.

“The marking by each citizen of the state symbols is not only an expression of gratitude to our ancestors who fought faithfully and bravely for freedom, but also a real lesson of civil upbringing and patriotism for the young generation”, wrote the President.

As already reported by Infotag, last February President Igor Dodon stood up with an initiative to institutionalize the historic flag of the Principality of Moldova as the country’s national symbol – the red banner with the bull’s head in the middle. He said he would discuss that initiative with the civil society and stand up with a corresponding legislative initiative shortly.

Infotag’s dossier: Moldova’s national flag is a tricolor consisting of three equal-size vertical blue, yellow and red strips. In the center of it, the yellow strip bears the National Emblem.

The National Flag Day was established by decision of the Moldovan Parliament passed on April 23, 2010. The Day has been timed to the date when the first Parliament of Moldova institutionalized on April 27, 1990 the new flag of the republic (i.e. sixteen months before the official declaration of the Republic of Moldova’s independence of the Soviet Union) and ordered to raise it above all state power institutions. Upon institutionalization of the National Flag Day, then-Prime Minister Vlad Filat ordered to build several high masts in various parts of the country to hoist large flags on.
