PRESIDENT DODON SAYS MOLDOVA SHOULD ADOPT BULGARIA’S EXPERIENCE AND INTRODUCE MIXED ELECTORAL SYSTEM

22 may, 2017

President Igor Dodon believes Moldova should adopt Bulgaria’s experience and introduce the mixed electoral system, he wrote on his Facebook page, commenting on his Monday’s meeting with Bulgaria Vice-President Iliana Yotova on the sidelines of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation Summit in Istanbul.

“Bulgaria recently voted at a referendum for transiting to the uninominal voting system. However, both the President and Vice-President stand for the mixed electoral system, and most probably they will achieve the introduction of the mixed system”, wrote Igor Dodon.

In his words, in the course of the meeting with Iliana Yotova the parties discussed questions of bilateral relations, economic and political issues, a possible change of the electoral system and Bulgaria’s experience in this sphere. Dodon emphasized he would not let the incumbent Moldovan authorities continue their taking anti-people decisions.

The interlocutors touched on the Taraclia Raion of Moldova [known for its compact ethnic Bulgarian community] and the possibilities of a merger of Taraclia State University with a state-run higher educational institution in Bulgaria.

“This should let save and develop Taraclia University and provide access for its students to Bulgarian and European programs and scholarships. The Bulgarian colleagues expressed concern about the liquidation of the Taraclia Raion within the framework of the projected administrative-territorial reform that should lead to enlargement of Moldovan raions. I assured our Bulgarian friends that I shall do all in my powers to prevent this”, stressed Igor Dodon.

He conveyed an invitation to President of Bulgaria Rumen Radev to visit Moldova.

“Before the end of June, Iliana Yotova will pay a visit to Moldova. By that time, we will have prepared a package of concrete questions on our bilateral agenda that should be solved during the forthcoming visits”, wrote the Moldovan President.
