CoE SECRETARY GENERAL THORBJORN JAGLAND TO VISIT MOLDOVA NEXT WEEK

Secretary General of the Council of Europe Thorbjorn Jagland will pay an official visit to Moldova on May 30-31 on the invitation of the Moldovan Government.

On May 30, the CoE Secretary General will speak at the presentation of the Council of Europe's 2017-2020 Action Plan on Moldova and of cooperation priorities. After that the high guest and Moldova's Deputy Premier, Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration Andrei Galbur will appear at a news conference.

Thorbjorn Jagland will hold meetings with Moldovan President Igor Dodon, Parliament Chairman Andrian Candu, the Moldovan parliamentary delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, with Prime Minister Pavel Filip, with Moldova's Political Representative at the Transnistria negotiations, Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration Affairs Gheorghe Balan, Minister of Justice Vladimir Cebotari, Minister of the Interior Alexandru Jizdan, Constitutional Court Chairman Tudor Pantiru.

The CoE Secretary General will meet also with the representatives of the Moldovan civil society and of extra-parliamentary parties, and will read a lecture at Moldova State University on modern challenges and threats to security and democracy.

As already reported by Infotag, the CoE Action Plan on Moldova for 2017-2020 was adopted by a delegation of the Council of Europe Committee of Ministers last February 1. The Plan is aimed at supporting the introduction of reforms in priority fields like struggle against corruption and against money laundering, raising of the independence and efficiency of the judiciary system, struggle against tortures and inhuman treatment of persons in custody, consolidation of the press freedom, the building of confidence between the two Dniester River banks.
