PREMIER FILIP EXPLAINS WHY HE DID NOT GO FOR CIS SUMMIT TO RUSSIA

29 may, 2017

Prime Minister Pavel Filip stated to journalists in the Parliament Building today that his refusal to go to Kazan city [in central Russia] for the Friday's Summit of the Heads of CIS Governments was due to Russia's non-responding to the official Note Moldova had sent to Moscow two months ago.

"I did not think long about going to the CIS Summit or not. Unfortunately, Russia did not respond officially to our Note. Moldova citizens suffered from the actions by certain state structures of Russia [in the Domodedovo airport of Moscow], including our governmental officials. We express solidarity with our citizens, and are continuing to wait for explanations from the Russian Federation", said Premier Filip.

In his words, the Government of Moldova has a positive attitude towards the Commonwealth of Independent States as such, and will be further taking part in CIS Summits in the Russian Federation territory, "but only if Russia replies to our Note and if we receive answers to our questions".

In early March 2017, the Moldovan Government sent an official Note to Moscow. The document contained Chisinau's discontent with the bad treatment of Moldovan officials "who are unfoundedly halted, delayed and interrogated at entering the Russian Federation - and occasionally even insulted - by Russian security service officers", and a notification that until the resolving of this problem, Moldovan officials will be recommended to abstain from going to Russia. Prime Minister Pavel Filip handed in the Note to the Russian Ambassador in Chisinau.

Shortly after that, Maria Zaharova, Director of the Information and Press Department in the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated that the Ministry had acknowledged the receipt of the Note, and "it is being scrutinized by Russian diplomats".
