LIBERALS WILL NOT SUPPORT VOTE OF NO CONFIDENCE IN GOVERNMENT

15 june, 2017

The parliamentary Liberal faction shall not put signatures under the draft Resolutions on a vote of no confidence in the Filip Government put forward one by the Party of Socialists and the other one, earlier, by the Liberal Democratic Party and the Communist Party.

Liberal Party Chairman Mihai Ghimpu stated to journalists: “We are Liberals. We have a policy of our own. We are an independent party even if this may be hated by some forces. How can an organization dare initiate a vote of no-confidence with merely 5 deputies in parliament?”

In his words, the Government of Pavel Filip, formed in early 2016 in a very hard situation with the Liberals’ help, has managed to do very much, “but the chief thing – it has saved the country’s European course”.

“We have done a lot together with this Government, even though we have been in the opposition since very recently. We have implemented many reforms and continued the European course. We have no reason to play somebody else’s games”, stated the Liberal Party leader.

Mihai Ghimpu announced that the currently oppositional Liberal Party will support the Democratic Party’s legislative initiative on “banning the Russian propaganda in Moldova”.

“From the very beginning, it was actually our initiative. So we will certainly vote for sparing our country from the Russian propaganda. We have a very good example – Ukraine. Our Ukrainian brothers have come to realize that Russians are not the kind of guys to joke with. But, actually, we are not against Russia – we are against Russian propaganda”, stressed Ghimpu.

Commenting on Mihai Ghimpu’s statements, Political Adviser to the Head of State and Presidential Press Secretary Ion Ceban remarked that, as a matter of fact, the Socialists were not and are not counting on Liberals votes or other help.

Last week, an initiative to vote no confidence in the Government was put forward by the parliamentary Liberal Democratic faction of 7. Shortly after that, signatures under that initiative were put also by the Communists (5 MPs). So, that initiative had received the support of 12 deputies.

And on June 14, the Socialist faction of 24 MPs put forth another draft Resolution on dismissing the Filip Government.

According to the law, for submitting the draft Resolution to the Parliament Secretariat, it is necessary to collect minimum 26 deputies’ signatures under it – a quarter of the 101-member Parliament of Moldova. In such case, the Parliament shall consider the initiative. A decision on discharging government needs to be supported by a simple majority of 51 MPs.
