EU DECLINES DP DEMAND NOT TO CONNECT FINANCING ALLOCATION AND VOTING SYSTEM CHANGE

22 june, 2017

Moldova should listen to recommendations of Council of Europe’s Venice Commission experts. On this depends the allocation of macrofinancial assistance worth 100 million euros, promised by the EU, said Commissioner for European Neighborhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations, Johannes Hahn at the Wednesday’s press conference on the results of meeting with Moldovan Prime Minister, Deputy Chairman of Democratic Party of Moldova Pavel Filip in Brussels.

He stressed that he agrees with Venice Commission which says that the introduction of mixed elections system is a fundamental change, which may lead to serious risks for democracy and the state of law in the current political situation in Moldova.

Any election reform should be approved in accordance with the political contest in Moldova and be oriented on electors’ demands, the EU Commissioner said.

He expressed hope that the Moldovan leadership will find a solution, based on the results and opinion of the Venice Commission.

“I think that the Venice Commission’s statement was clear enough – in current conditions the election system change is unsuitable”, Johannes Hahn said, adding that Moldovan authorities should start dialog with other political forces, interested sides and civil society organizations.

According to him, only after this the EU will assess the result of these dialogs and they will influence the decision on financing continuation.

Assessing the progress of reform implementation in Moldova, the European Commissioner admitted that over the last 1.5 years, the authorities achieved certain efforts in combating corruption, ensuring economic growth and building state of law.
