10 august, 2017

On Wednesday, the Buiucani office of the Court of Chisinau sentenced Former Minister of Transport and Road Infrastructure, Deputy Chairman of the Liberal Party Iurie Chirinciuc to 1.4 years in semi-open prison for abuse of power and benefiting from official position.

According to the verdict, Chirinciuc also has to pay a fine of 700 conventional units (35 thousand lei) and is deprived of the right to occupy public posts for a period of 10 years after sentence servicing.

Together with Chirinciuc, verdicts were issued to two entrepreneurs. One of them got 1 year, while the other has to pay a fine of 110 thousand lei.

The issuing of the court decision has been postponed three times. On the day of verdict pronouncement, the judge was first prohibiting press to be present at the process, while then hid his face behind a sheet of paper, saying that he prohibits to make video recording of him, though the process of verdict pronouncement is public and press has the right to attend it.

Chirinciuc is still at large, as the sentence enters into force only after the decision of the Appeals Chamber.

Chirinciuc was detained on April 27 together with head of the Motor Road Administration Veaceslav Teleman and a number of entrepreneurs. They were accused of corruption and abuse of power. Several accusations were charged to Chirinciuc, including the taking of bribe of 50 thousand euros. The very moment of bribe taking was recorded on video and published in internet.
