LIBERALS CONDEMN PRESIDENT'S PARTICIPATION IN FESTIVITIES IN GAGAUZIA

21 august, 2017

The Liberal Party of Moldova condemned the participation of Moldovan President Igor Dodon in festivities dedicated to the 27th anniversary of the Gagauz Republic. Liberals' leader Mihai Ghimpu wrote in social networks that by means of his participation, Dodon is provoking ethnic separatism in the south of Moldova, legalizing the violation of the Moldovan Constitution and Laws.

"The attending by Dodon and other officials of festivities in Comrat in commemoration of the date of August 19, 1990, when the so-called Congress of people's deputies of the southern region of Moldova took place and the separatist Gagauz republic was proclaimed, is a challenge to the sovereign, unitary character of Moldova, which may be easily classified as treason, committed by the first person of the state", Ghimpu wrote.

The LP condemns anti-Romanian and anti-European statements, made by Dodon in Comrat, which also were posted on president's official website. Dodon stated that Gagauz people were among the first to stand against the unionist course of Chisinau authorities and that the citizens of Gagauzia clearly stand for Moldova's accession to the Eurasian Economic Union.

According to Ghimpu, these are provocative statements against most of Moldovan citizens, who want that Moldova to join the European Union.

"The president should represent interests of all Moldovan citizens, while by means of his statements and actions, Dodon is threatening the relations of our country with the EU, undermines Moldova's image in the world, seriously damages the Constitution and other laws, threatens citizens' security, raising dangerous topics, such as ethnic separatism", Ghimpu wrote.

The LP proposes the Moldovan Parliament to urgently establish a special commission on investigating all the cases of Constitution violation and abuses, committed by Igor Dodon as Moldovan president.
