MOLDOVAN PRESIDENT, RUSSIAN AMBASSADOR DISCUSS BILATERAL RELATIONS AND TRANSNISTRIAN SETTLEMENT

18 octomber, 2017

Moldovan President Igor Dodon and the Russian Federation’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Republic of Moldova, Farit Muhametshin, today discussed questions of development of bilateral relations and of Transnistrian conflict settlement.

Dodon wrote on his Facebook page afterwards that the interlocutors spoke out for invigoration of the relations, for imparting a new impulse to them proceeding from the accords reached during the meeting of Presidents Dodon and Vladimir Putin held in Sochi city last week.

The President further wrote he and Ambassador Muhametshin discussed the organization of a joint meeting of the Moldova-Russia Parliamentary Friendship Group scheduled for late November.

Dodon and Muhametshin considered also the Transnistrian question and spoke out for joining efforts to develop dialog on various levels with Transnistria representatives, including at the level of leaders.

“We arrived at a common opinion that it is necessary to maintain stability in this region by means of dialog and confidence building, and that both Chisinau and Tiraspol must be interested in this”, wrote the Moldovan President.

In his words, some ill-thought steps by certain representatives of the Transnistrian administration, described by the Tiraspol mass media, are causing concern, “so I spoke out a wish to unite efforts and overcome this negative trend and restore a positive dialog”.

As was already reported by Infotag, on October 7 Igor Dodon invited Transnistrian civil society activists to his countryside residence at Holercani. Among his guests were mainly the representatives of the Transnistrian Communist Party (TCP) strongly oppositional to the incumbent Transnistrian authorities. The meeting was attended by TCP Chairman Oleg Horjan, a deputy of the Transnistrian supreme soviet [parliament]. The meeting with Dodon was strongly condemned by other Transnistrian civil society organizations and by the Tiraspol administration.

And yesterday, the Transnistrian Communist Party reported that a murder of Horjan was projected for the past Sunday, “which was prevented thanks to the interference of Russian secret services”. The Transnistrian security service stated it had not disposed of whatever information about the prepared assassination of Oleg Horjan.
