UNIFICATION WITH MOLDOVA SHOULD BE DONE STEP BY STEP - BASESCU

20 octomber, 2017

Ex-President of Romania Traian Basescu says unification of Moldova and Romania needs to be implemented in stages. He presented his point of view at his meeting with the Romanian-speaking intelligentsia in Chisinau.

"At the first stage, it must be a unification of Romania with the mainland Moldova, without Transnistria. We don't speak of Bessarabia [the historic territory between the Prut and Dniester Rivers plus a greater part of the present-day Chernovtsy and Odessa regions of Ukraine, which before 1940 belonged to the Kingdom of Romania], for we must proceed from the present-day reality. We are speaking of the Republic of Moldova territory, bearing in mind that the historic border of Romania went along the Dniester [in 1918-1940]", said Basescu.

In his opinion, the question of the belonging of Transnistria should be put off for the future.

"Transnistria should not be left completely to the mercy of fate. So this question needs discussion. For this, it is necessary to hold negotiations with the participation of all interested parties, including Russia, Ukraine, the European Union and the United States. This has to be done for one more reason: Romania should not absorb into its territory a conflict with the Russian Federation", said Traian Basescu.

The ex-president stressed that all such issues must be discussed and solved democratically - at the negotiating table.

"For this, we should strictly abide by the Helsinki Accords [1975], according to which border questions must be solved through negotiations between countries. Also, it is necessary to remember that the Helsinki Accords prohibits reshaping of borders by means of threats or by using military force", stressed Basescu.

In his words, Romania also needs the unification.

"Certainly, this will entail extra financial expenditures and a multitude of problems. But all this is soluble. Romania also needs the unification - for restoration of historic justice, for liquidation of the consequences of the shameful Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact, and for strengthening its current positions. For instance, Romania currently has a population of 21.5 million. But in case of Moldova's accession, Romania will be moved into a higher category of European Union countries - with populations of over 25 million", explained the former president.

As for Moldova, "In its current shape, it has no perspectives for the future whatsoever. Its neutrality is fictitious because not a single country in the world has recognized this neutrality, and Moldova is not able to ensure its security independently. Moldova's chances to accede to the European Union are more than illusory because nobody in Brussels has ever spoken seriously about admitting Moldova to the European Union. So, unification with Romania is the shortest way for Moldova to resolve the problems it comes across", stated Traian Basescu.
