LP SUBMITS DOCUMENTS FOR CANVASSING IN MUNICIPAL REFERENDUM

24 octomber, 2017

The Liberal Party has submitted documents for acquiring the right to take part in canvassing in the run-up to November 19 referendum on a vote of confidence in Chisinau Mayor Dorin Chirtoaca. The Central Election Commission said the Liberals did that last Saturday i.e. on the last day of document acceptance period.

The LP wrote in its press release that during the canvassing period, the party will be represented by its First Deputy Chairman Dorin Chirtoaca. In this connection, the Liberal Party will request the Court to change the measure of restraint for Chirtoaca, who is under a house arrest now.

In his turn, Dorin Chirtoaca addressed to the Court for permission to personally apply for participation in the referendum campaign. Earlier this month, the Chisinau District Election Board declined his application, claiming that only organizations may canvass for referenda, and not individuals. Chirtoaca applied to the court for justice, but the court set the examination of his application for this Monday, October 23, being perfectly aware that the deadline for accepting applications to the CEC would expire on October 21.

So far, the Central Election Commission has registered only the Party of Socialists as a referendum canvasser. The Communist Party stated its support for the referendum holding, but has not got registered. All the rest organizations have stated they will stay away from whatever canvassing.
