RUSSIA WILL NOT AGREE TO EU AND NATO ENLARGEMENT AT THE EXPENSE OF ABSORBING MOLDOVA - BASESCU

17 november, 2017

The only possible way for Moldovans to become Europeans is to get united with Romania, maintains its former president Traian Basescu, who met on Thursday with the students and professors of International Independent University of Moldova (ULIM).

Basescu believes that Russia will not agree to enlargement of EU and NATO territories at the expense of including Moldova into these organizations. He reminded that the European Union has set itself a priority for the nearest decade to continue enlarging in the direction of the Balkan Peninsular, and not to the East.

The former Romanian president called unification with the Republic of Moldova "an attainable objective".

He admits that this can happen "if not now, then when new generations of politicians come, who will comprehend what the European Union's policy means and how Moldova can get integrated into the European Union quicker. But the longer we delay this, the more expensive the process will be. The difference between the Romanian and Moldovan GDPs is growing each coming year".

Concerning the desire of the Party of Socialists and President Igor Dodon to integrate Moldova into the Eurasian Economic Union [of Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Armenia and Kyrgyzstan, EAES], Basescu stated that such integration idea "does not hold water".

"Moldova's geographic position and the Moldovan culture are incompatible with the Eurasian vector", stated Traian Basescu.

He said the present-day Moldova is a region of struggle between two forces: Russia is present here with its army, and the European Union - with its finances and with its supporting of Moldovan reforms. And this is precisely why the Republic of Moldova and its population have been in uncertainty.

"A viable solution for Moldova is unification with Romania. Being a NATO Member Country, Romania will ensure security for Moldova, and being a European Union member - will bring prosperity to Moldova citizens", promised the ex-president.

Touching on the Transnistrian conflict, Basescu stated that it can be settled through negotiations with Ukraine and Russia, "but only on condition of a unification process between Moldova and Romania".

"Russia's objective is to create in Transnistria a military base similar to that in the Kaliningrad Oblast [the western-most region of the Russian Federation, the former Eastern Prussia on the Baltic Sea coast, sandwiched between Poland and Lithuania]", believes Traian Basescu.
