IGOR DODON RENDERS AN ACCOUNT OF HIS FIRST YEAR'S ACTIVITIES

13 december, 2017

On Tuesday, Moldovan President Igor Dodon convened a news conference to present a report about his work in the first year of his presidential mandate.

During the year, he undertook 19 visits to foreign countries, including 3 official ones - to Russia, Armenia and Azerbaijan, and 16 working visits. Also, the President visited 154 populated areas in Moldova and held meetings with more than 12 thousand citizens.

In the past year, the head of state signed 464 presidential decrees, including 175 - on promulgation of laws. At the same time, he returned 20 laws to the Parliament for reconsideration. He stood up with legislative initiatives on 57 bills. The President decorated 237 people with state awards, though various organizations submitted applications for decorating 785 persons.

"Direct assistance was rendered to more than 70 thousand citizens, including within the framework of various social and charitable actions. The President considered 3,062 petitions over the year", said Igor Dodon.

The head of state said that the presidential administration is now drafting a Strategy of Moldova's development for a long perspective, and that he is going to present this document in February 2018 at the opening of the Spring-Summer Session of the Moldovan Parliament. At the same time, over the whole year the head of state had not used his right to address with a message to the Parliament, and had not spoken before deputies.

Igor Dodon stated an intention to officially lodge with the Parliament a draft law on prohibiting political parties and movements standing for liquidation of the Republic of Moldova statehood and for Moldova's unification with other countries.

In this context, answering journalists' questions about the announcing of ex-President of Romania Traian Basescu as a persona non grata in Moldova for his campaigning for unification with Romania, Dodon confirmed that this question is being considered by the head of state.

"I have received a civil society address on this issue, and the document is being studied. Besides this, as you may remember, I have signed a presidential decree on depriving Basescu of his Moldovan citizenship. He has challenged the decree with the Constitutional Court. I hope that in the nearest future this question will be finally resolved", said Dodon.

He stressed that consolidation of Moldova's statehood is one of the main priorities in his presidential activities. In that context, Dodon said that at the beginning of 2018 he will organize for citizens a nation-wide day of demonstration of the documentary film "The History of Moldova" shot under his patronage. The President also said that a new textbook called "The History of Moldova" is being elaborated to be included into school and other curricula after the parliamentary election due at the end of 2018.

Asked about his possible visit to Romania, Igor Dodon reminded that a few months ago he had sent an official invitation to President of Romania Klaus Iohannis to come for a visit to Moldova.

"You know how he answered. And I will answer to you likewise - everything will be in due time", said Igor Dodon, who has had no contacts whatsoever with the authorities of Moldova's only neighbors - Romania and Ukraine over the past year.

Dodon said that to take part in the ceremony of burial of King Mihai of Romania he will delegate Presidential Adviser Corneliu Popovici to Bucharest.
