LIBERAL DEMOCRATS CRITICIZE CEC FOR DENYING REGISTRATION OF ANTI-MES INITIATIVE GROUP

15 january, 2018

The Central Election Commission’s refusal to register the initiative group for organizing a referendum for cancelling the mixed election system is a new evidence that the Democratic Party has usurped the entire state power in Moldova and fully controls the country’s state institutions, believes Liberal Democratic Party Chairman Viorel Cibotaru.

He wrote in the social networks that the preservation of the mixed election system – despite the vociferous objections by the Moldovan opposition and civil society and despite the critical opinions expressed by foreign partners – is causing serious questions about the DP’s intentions and about the honesty and fairness of the would-be election campaign.

The LDPM Chairman called on the civil society to continue “the struggle for our right to live in a democratic society”. He addressed to the President and Parliament to consider the CEC’s decision.

The Commission denied registration to the initiative group for the organization of the above-mentioned referendum because the group had allegedly been formed with violation of legislation. Six CEC members voted against the group registration and only two Commission members – for registering the group.

Group leader Stefan Gligor stated to journalists upon hearing the CEC decision that the registration denial is but a violation of the citizens’ constitutional right to hold legislative referenda.

Gligor said that on Monday the initiative group coordinators will meet to decide about further actions. According to him, the activists will undertake a new attempt to register the initiative group with the CEC.
