ANTI-MES INITIATIVE GROUP TO CHALLENGE CEC'S DECISION WITH COURT

17 january, 2018

The initiative group for organizing a referendum on cancelling the mixed election system will shortly challenge with the court the Central Election Commission's decision to deny registration of the group, which was going to begin raising citizens' signatures in favor of holding such referendum.

Group leader Stefan Gligor said at a news conference on Tuesday that the day before the group leadership had decided to challenge the CEC's registration denial decision, after which the initiative group will undertake a second attempt to get registered.

"According to various ratings of the independence of the judiciary, Moldova is standing traditionally at the bottom of lists. According to one of the latest ratings [Index of Public Integrity, IPI], Moldova is raking the 105th out of 109 nations included into the research. And according to the Global Economic Forum, Moldova is on the 129-133rd place among 136 countries", said Gligor.

"We are calling on all political parties, from the Communists to the unionists [adherents to the idea of Unirea - Moldova's unification with Romania] to understand that the ruling Democratic Party, by acting jointly with the Socialists, are doing all they can to disunite us as a civil society", said Stefan Gligor. He believes the authorities are afraid of the civil society's initiative backed by the people having communist and liberal outlooks.

As was already reported by Infotag, the Central Election Commission denied registration to the initiative group because there were violations in the submitted list of group members. In particular, one of approximately 700 members of the initiative group has put his signatures in two different questionnaires, said the CEC.
