DODON SAYS HE MAY COME TO HEAD PSRM ELECTION TICKET

18 january, 2018

President Igor Dodon has admitted that, may be, he will agree to stand at the head of the Party of Socialists’ election ticket.

Speaking on the local television on Wednesday evening, he said: “It is early yet to say anything concrete, but such possibility should not be ruled out completely. The people will decide, and the Party will take a decision. At any rate, the law does not prohibit this. Instances are known when presidents headed party tickets at elections”.

Dodon agreed with the journalist’s opinion that the President at the head of the electoral ticket will promote the party’s success at the election.

“But you should not talk about all this so loudly and often. If the authorities hear you, they may re-write the legislation to forbid the President to stand for parliament”, Dodon said with a smile.

He refused to answer concerning the Socialists’ possible coalitions: “We are not even discussing this question. We must take a majority in the next Parliament. We may form a majority with some independent deputies to be elected from single-member constituencies. I am sure we will manage to form a strong pro-Moldova majority standing for consolidation of Moldova’s statehood”.

Dodon called not to raise the question of the country’s external vector in the course of the election campaign but, instead, to focus on the country’s interests.

“I stand up for Eurasian integration. Other people may stand for European integration. Each person has his or her own preferences, and nobody is going to change one’s mind. It is important to think of the country’s interests and defend and promote them in the West as well as in the East”, stressed the President.

Igor Dodon voiced confidence that the mixed election system is advantageous for the Party of Socialists.

“It is raising our chances for an electoral success. Under the previous, proportional representation system, the incumbent authorities would indeed take preventive measures – would register a couple of new socialist parties with same symbols as ours and would create spoilers to ruin our victory. The mixed election system diminishes such risks”, said Igor Dodon.
