RENATO USATII GOING TO LEAVE POLITICS IN MOLDOVA IF HIS PARTY LOSES MAYORAL ELECTION IN BALTI

21 march, 2018

Renato Usatii, leader of the Partidul Nostru [Our Party, OP] and Mayor of Balti [in 2015 through February 2018], has promised to put an end to his political activities in Moldova if Our Party candidate loses the May 20 snap mayoral election in the country's second-largest city.

In his video address cast on the social networks on Tuesday night, Usatii said that Our Party will nominate its own candidate for Balti Mayor and that his organization is optimistic about its victory, though he feels that the ruling Democratic Party will support in Balti the candidate of the Party of Socialists.

"There may be yet a second variant: these two parties may decide to nominate their so-called 'independent candidate'. Look, Dodon has already announced his Socialist candidate in Chisinau, but is remaining silent about the 'northern capital', Balti. They [with Plahotniuc?] are deep in thought", presumes the strongly opposition politician, hiding in Moscow since August 2016 from what he calls "the Plahotniuc justice in Moldova".

He is convinced that election defeats in Chisinau and Balti will mean for the ruling Democratic Party a very serious blow on its political image.

"That's why the Socialists and Democrats will unite forces at the snap election. They received a signal for final ruining of Our Party shortly after the visit to Moldova paid by U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Bridget Brink. This order was made because Americans are being frightened with Our Party, which allegedly supports Russian tanks and the like stuff. In the reality, however, Our Party is one of very few political forces, with whom Plahotniuc and his Democrats will never be able to strike a bargain in parliament after the forthcoming election", explained Renato Usatii.

In his words, since his election Balti Mayor in 2015, the city has been "a fortress in the way to the advancement of corruption schemes in the republic".

"We have become the only city where its leadership offered a fierce resistance to the introduction of corruption schemes, to the garbage and other mafias. And if Balti citizens give their ballots for Our Party candidate, this will mean that they vote confidence in our organization and in our actions and work over last 3 years. But our defeat will mean that Balti residents and all citizens of Moldova do not want any changes or reforms. In my understanding, what was done in Balti last 3 years must be done also all over Moldova", said the ex-Mayor of Balti.

Renato Usatii did not mention the name of Our Party candidate for Balti Mayor, and only said, "It will be a good candidate who will continue my cause". It is expected that the candidacy will be entrusted to incumbent Acting Mayor Nicolae Grigorishin or the leader of the OP faction in the Balti Municipal Council, Elena Gritco.
