LIBERALS ANNOUNCE BOYCOTT OF PARLIAMENT PLENARY MEETINGS "UNTIL UNIFICATION WITH ROMANIA"

22 march, 2018

The Liberal faction will be boycotting the Parliament's plenary meetings until the Republic of Moldova gets united with Romania, LP Chairman Mihai Ghimpu announced in the Parliament on Thursday, after the legislative forum had once again declined the Liberals' idea to hold a special sitting of the Moldovan Parliament on March 27 to be dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the Great Unification of Bessarabia and Romania.

Ghimpu stated that it would be undoubtedly correct to hold such a sitting "because had it not been for the Great Unification in 1918, the current Parliament might have not existed as such now".

Mihai Ghimpu also said that if the Parliament does not wish to assemble for such a special sitting, "then let the Liberal Party hold such session by ourselves. Give is a hall for organizing a celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Great Unification".

Parliament Chairman Andrian Candu reminded once again that according to the law, the Parliament's special meetings may be convoked only by the President of Moldova, by the Parliament Speaker or on the initiative of minimum one-third of deputies. Candu thus declined the Liberals' request and even did not put it to the vote.

MP Marian Lupu of the ruling Democratic Party said then: "As far as I can understand, we will never see our Liberal Party colleagues in this room: they have quitted the Parliament until Moldova's unification with Romania. But there shall be no unification. Never".

Then ex-President of Moldova MP Vladimir Voronin of the Communist faction, with a smile on his face, also demanded a hall for the MCP faction to hold the marking "of the 100th anniversary of the Romanian occupation of Bessarabia". [Bessarabia is the historic territory between the Prut and Dniester Rivers plus a greater part of the present-day Chernovtsy and Odessa regions of Ukraine, which before 1940 belonged to the Kingdom of Romania.]
