MOLDOVA TO FURTHER INSIST ON WITHDRAWAL OF RUSSIAN TROOPS FROM MOLDOVA - SPEAKER CANDU

20 april, 2018

Moldovan Parliament Chairman Andrian Candu has stated that the republic will be further insisting on adopting a United Nations Resolution on the need to withdraw Russian troops from the Moldovan territory.

On Thursday, Candu organized a news conference in the Parliament Building to cover the results of his one-week-long working visit to the United States, and reminded inter alia that Moldova had requested to include this question yet into the Agenda of the Autumn Session of the United Nations General Assembly in 2017.

"It's a pity there were so many interpretations and speculations on the issue. Moldova has been long insisting on the removal of the Operative Group of Russian Troops (OGRV) from Transnistria and not of Russian peacekeepers. Last year, Russia resorted to certain procedural measures to block the draft Resolution [on troop withdrawal] so as to avoid its inclusion into the Agenda", said Andrian Candu.

In his words, despite all this, the document is being supported by many countries, "and the procedure of its inclusion into the UN General Assembly Agenda will be accomplished most probably in June".

"Germany, the United States and some other countries have already given their preliminary accord on the Resolution. Besides this, many countries may yet sign this document and thus stand up as its co-authors", said the Speaker.

In his words, he discussed this question - among other ones - in the United Nations, where he participated in a meeting as an ambassador on traffic safety issues. Candu said that he discussed also the draft Resolution prepared by the United States Congress in support of Moldova.

"The draft has already been submitted to the Congress. It expresses the United States' support for the Republic of Moldova's position on the current complicated geopolitical situation, support for our European strivings, and contains a demand to withdraw from Moldova the Russian troops deployed there illegitimately. We hope the United States Congress will approve this document in the nearest future", said Andrian Candu.
