MOLDOVAN PARLIAMENT ADOPTS NATIONAL MEDIA DEVELOPMENT CONCEPT

At its plenary sitting held on Friday, the [101-member] Moldovan Parliament adopted the National Mass Media Development Concept by the votes of 56 MPs.

The Concept is aimed to serve as an orientation for an agreed-on state policy in the media field and for a policy targeted at strengthening the role played by the media system in ensuring the citizens' constitutional right to receive information and in consolidation of the country's democratic society.

The Concept stipulates the creation of an efficient legal frame for the media activities on democratic principles. The document stipulates the creation of a sound basis for ensuring a fair media market and independent editorial policies wages by media outlets.

A special Chapter is dedicated to the instruments and methods of resolving various problems in the sphere of the press. The solutions include a permanent improvement of national legal frames, working out and realization of a strategy, program and action plan for achieving the Concept goals, for monitoring and analysis of the Concept implementation process. The Government shall be preparing Annual Reports on the results of realization of these goals.

The document authors are maintaining that the Concept is in line with European standards and norms. It has been prepared by domestic and international experts as well as by civil society representatives within the working group for improving the Moldovan media legislation.
