CANDIDATES FOR CHISINAU MAYOR THANK VOTERS

21 may, 2018

The candidates for Chisinau Mayor, who took part in the snap election in the Moldovan capital, thanked voters for their support. Also, the two finalists – Ion Ceban of the Party of Socialists and DA Platform Chairman Andrei Nastase told the public how they will be preparing for a second round of elections to be held on June 3.

At the briefing held late last night after the preliminary results had become known, Ion Ceban thanked his voters and congratulated Andrei Nastase with his good election result. Ceban proposed also to hold daily public debates on city problems.

“I suggest holding such public debates in the presence of journalists. We must discuss all Chisinau problems, propose solutions and present our vision of city development. Like it was during this election campaign, we should we should cast aside politics and geopolitics, and should concentrate exclusively on Chisinau’s problems”, stated Ion Ceban.

Answering journalists’ questions, he explained the low voter turnout with the fact that many residents of Chisinau, like in other regions of the country, are not available in the country.

“The problem is in voter lists. I guess we should establish order in that sphere. It is necessary to proceed from the real number of people available in the city at the present time – and not from the voter registers compiled many years ago”, said Ceban.

Andrei Nastase stated the struggle is continuing.

“We have ruined the scenario prepared by the Moldovan oligarchic authorities. We have won a battle, but it is necessary to win to whole war so as to save Chisinau. And at the parliamentary election due in the forthcoming autumn, we must overthrow this regime”, Nastase state, and thanked the voters and partners who backed him in the first round.

Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS) Chairperson Maya Sandu also expressed gratitude, having particularly highlighted the solidarity shown.

“This election has proved that it is possible to get united and achieve a sought result. Chisinau citizens have proved that the people’s power is stronger and more important than the strength of the oligarchs currently in power”, stated Maya Sandu.

Answering journalists’ questions, Andrei Nastase made it clear that he would not take part in public debates with Ion Ceban.

“Each of us has an agenda of one’s own. Like before, I will be meeting the residents of the city and its suburbs to discuss problems they face”, said Andrei Nastase.

He stated also that “Ion Ceban is a candidate agreed upon between Vlad Plahotniuc and Igor Dodon, and he has also participated in all power schemes of last 10 years”.

Independent candidate Silvia Radu, who ranked the third on May 20, stated that unlike other candidates she had no backing by political parties.

“I wanted to depoliticize the election and the Chisinau Primaria [city government]. Now the struggle for the Chisinau Mayor’s post will acquire a distinct political character”, stated Silvia Radu.
