OP CANDIDATE WINS MAYORAL ELECTION IN BALTI
Nicolai Grigorishin, the candidate of the Partidul Nostru [Our Party, OP], won the early mayoral election in Balti already in the first round held on May 20, having received 61.74% ballots.
The second best was Alexander Usatii of the Party of Socialists with 19.17% votes. The third was Arina Spataru of the DA Platform (6.12%). Then go Pavel Verejan of Ilan Shor Party (5.76%) and Sergiu Burlacu of the National Unity Party (PUN) with 3.98%. Yet three more candidates polled less than 1% each.
The voting was attended by 36,427 thousand Balti citizens, which figure made a voter turnout of slightly under 34.93%.
Nicolai Grigorishin represents Our Party headed by a politician very popular in the country’s second-largest city – Renato Usatii. Three years ago, he also won the mayoral election in Balti already in the first round, having polled 72%. However, since August 2016 Usatii has been hiding in Moscow after the Moldovan judiciary had started litigation against him, which Renato maintains to be a purely political undertaking. Realizing that he would not be able to return to Balti in the present-day conditions in the republic, Mayor Usatii tendered resignation to cause a snap election.
