DEMOCRATIC PARTY CANDIDATES WIN IN 4-OF-7 POPULATED AREAS ON MAY 20

21 may, 2018

At the early mayoral elections held on May 20 in seven Moldovan populated areas, candidates from the ruling Democratic Party won in 4 localities, the Central Election Commission (CEC) reported on its official website on Monday.

In the Leuseni Commune (in the Hincesti Raion), Democrat Ion Dragan won already in the first round – he polled 90.79% ballots. His rival Ion Bujeac from the Party of Socialists received only 9.20%. The voter turnout was 37% (663 voters).

In the Nemteni Village (Hincesti Raion), Democrat Maria Ghitu won a victory with 82.58% ballots cast for her. Socialist Timofei Sindrila polled 17.41%. Voter turnout was 36.87% (534) there.

The mayoral election in the Volovita Commune (Soroca Raion) ended with the victory of Democrat Ghenadie Nistrean who won 79.36%. And his Socialist opponent Alexandru Cernat polled 20.83%. Voter turnout was 46.89% (761).

In the Pirlita Village (Ungheni Raion), Democrat Stanislav Babutac polled 85.61%, and his main rival Galina Andriuta of the DA Platform – 14.38%. Voter turnout there was 39.67% (1,717).

However, the governing DP lost elections in three populated areas where the struggle for the mayor posts was of greater importance. Thus, in the Commune of Jora de Mijloc (Orhei Raion), the election was won by Marina Tauber, Deputy Chairperson of Ilan Shor Party, who polled 61.07%. Her rivals were Democrat Lucia Terenti (38.05%) and Socialist Sergiu Morozan (0.87%). That locality had the highest voter turnout of all – 52.99% (1,716).

As was already reported by Infotag, in Chisinau the second round of voting will be between Socialist Ion Ceban (40.98%) and DA Platform leader Andrei Nastase (32.12%). And in Balti, victory was won with 61.74% by Nicolai Grigorishin of Our Party.

The ruling Democratic Party has not yet reacted in any way to the Sunday voting results. Formally, the Party had no official candidates in either Chisinau or Balti. However, in the capital city the Democrats rendered their full support to “independent candidate” Silvia Radu, while in Balti they acted team-like with the Party of Socialists against Our Party candidate Nicolai Grigorishin, who has won a convincing victory in the country’s second-largest city.
