VOTERS' WILL SHOULD BE RESPECTED IN MOLDOVA - EEAS

21 june, 2018

The European External Action Service published a statement concerning the validation of the Chisinau Mayor election.

According to the EEAS website, Andrei Nastase was elected at the mayoral elections on June 3 with a popular support of the Chisinau electorate, as recognized also by observers. It is of utmost importance that the will of the voters is respected.В

"In view of yesterday's decision of the Chisinau City Court to not validate the election of Andrei Nastase as Mayor of Chisinau, it is essential that the appeal proceedings are held in a fair and fully transparent manner", the statement says.

The EEAS maintains that the European Union expects the Republic of Moldova to guarantee the functioning of democratic mechanisms, in line with international standards and commitments under the EU-Moldova Association Agreement, including when it comes to elections.

Infotag's dossier: The Court of Chisinau declared as invalid the results of Chisinau mayoral elections on July 19. The judges explained this by the fact that Nastase, who won at elections, was conducting agitation directly on the election day, as well as foreign citizens were openly supporting him. Nastase said he disagrees with the decision and challenged it in the Chisinau Appeals Court.
