EU AMBASSADORS, MOLDOVAN GOVERNMENT DISCUSS SITUATION AFTER CHISINAU MAYORAL ELECTION INVALIDATION

09 july, 2018

Ambassadors from EU countries discussed the situation after the invalidation of the Chisinau election.

According to the EU Delegation message, the ambassadors expressed concern in relation to this in European capitals. The diplomats reminded about joint statement of Federica Mogherini, High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice-President of the European Commission and the Commissioner for European Neighborhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations, Johannes Hahn, who regarded the decision to cancel the Chisinau election results as a threat to democracy and as undermining of citizens’ trust in state institutions.

“In this connection, we stressed the need that Moldovan authorities to find democratic means to resolve this unprecedented situation. Also, we reminded about the European union expectations that the authorities will guarantee the independence of justice in accordance with the adopted international liabilities, which is a key principle of legal state and an important element of democracy”, the press release says.

The ambassadors stressed that the EU and its member countries will continue to attentively supervise the process of reforms, the functioning of state institutions and the implementation of the EU-Moldova Association Agreement.

Diplomats reminded about the tough resolution of the European Parliament, adopted on July 5 and the European Commission’s decision to suspend macro-financial assistance to Moldova until the fulfillment of preliminary political conditions concerning democracy, the law-governed state and human rights.
