PARLIAMENT TO ANALYZE ELECTION LEGISLATION

13 july, 2018

The parliamentary majority established an ad-hoc commission for analyzing the election legislation, which led to the invalidation of the Chisinau mayoral election results and canceling of the victory, gained by leader of the "Demnitate si Adevar" Party Andrei Nastase.

The author of the draft law on creating the commission, Deputy Speaker Valeriu Ghiletchi said at the Thursday's Parliament sitting that the reason for the court decision was the petition submited by the Party of Socialists, whose candidate Ion Ceban was Nastase's main rival at elections.

"This petition points at violations, committed by the election winner, including on the election day, which in the court opinion affected the voting results", the MP said.

According to him, it is absolutely necessary to focus on seeking solutions which will prevent such situation from recurrence.

The commission will be created on the basis of the parliamentary Standing Committee on Legal Affairs, Appointments and Immunity. Over 60 days, the MPs have to conduct the analysis of the legislation.

According to the Deputy Speaker, the commission will have to clearly establish which violations and in which conditions may become reasons for canceling the election results.

Speaker of the Parliament Andrian Candu said: "The court decision is a law. Full stop! "

"Politically, the DP would like that Nastase to come to the Primaria and meet the disaster and stay in it a year with no results. After that we would take revenge on him in the parliamentary election campaign. This is what we would like", he stated.
