PARLIAMENT SPEAKER HOPES PARLIAMENTARY ELECTION DATE WILL BE APPOINTED BEFORE END OF CURRENT SESSION

16 july, 2018

Chairman of the Parliament Andrian Candu said he hopes that the day of parliamentary elections will be established before the end of the current plenary session of the legislature. Speaking in a live program “Friday with Anatol Golea” on the RTR Moldova channel [the Moldovan subsidiary of Russia’s second-largest television and radio corporation], the Speaker said that the date of elections should be appointed not later than 60 days before the very voting day.

“Specialists in the field of the constitutional law say that elections should not be conducted before November 30. Thus, there is a Constitutional Court decision in this regard, according to which the Parliament mandate should be consummated. The election should take place within three months after the mandate expiry – in the period between December 1, 2018 through February 28 or March 1, 2019, depending on how you count”, Candu said.

He said that the date of elections is being discussed now.

“I hope very much that the decision in this regard will be taken in the coming two weeks. It would be great to establish the date of elections now”, the Speaker said.

Answering to the question about the possible coalitions after elections he expressed hope that it will be possible to create a coalition of Democratic Party with the right-wing parties, to preserve the European course.

“We understand that there will be election campaign, political fight and confrontation. But after elections politicians should demonstrate a certain sixth sense and wisdom. We will have to sit to the negotiating table and decide what to do next, how to form the action program and approve the Government. I hope that those who criticize us will also demonstrate responsibility”, Candu said.

With all this, he excludes the creation of a coalition of DP with the Party of Socialists.

“This is improbable, almost impossible to create coalition with Socialists. We have too many disagreements. Given what they say and how they act, how they attack neighboring countries, how they criticize the EU-Moldova Association Agreement, I see no possibility to create a coalition with Socialists”, the Speaker said.
