SPEAKER CANDU HOPES FOR AMENDING CONSTITUTION THIS UPCOMING AUTUMN

08 august, 2018

Moldovan Parliament Chairman Andrian Candu has voiced hope for a soon-to-be introduction of an essential amendment to the Constitution to stipulate that European integration is the strategic course of the Republic of Moldova’s development.

In his interview with Radio Moldova, Candu said: “This initiative of ours [DP’s] is remaining one of the very few legislative ‘arrears’, which we failed to clear in the course of the just completed Spring-Summer Session of the Parliament. So far, the parliamentary majority has no votes enough for adopting such a constitutional amendment. We will continue our negotiations on the issue with parliamentary parties supporting the country’s Euro-integration course namely with the Liberals and Liberal Democrats”.

In his opinion, no particularly great negotiations are needed for this “because everything is clear even without such talks: we all speak of the country development course and of preserving Moldova on the Euro-integration track”.

“I don’t quite understand what we should talk about. Perhaps, more time is needed for all this. I hope we will do this in the upcoming autumn, though one should not forget that problems may arise with the promulgation of such law. Accordingly, extra time will be needed for a repeated voting for the law in the Parliament”, said the Speaker.

He refrained from answering concretely if the parliamentary majority is going to suspend for a 4th time President Igor Dodon from office [for 10-15 minutes] should a necessity arise to promulgate the constitutional amendments.

“Let’s not hurry up events. We should wait until autumn and then we will see. We realize it will be difficult to act in the conditions of a parliamentary campaign, for there will be a lot of statements, extremities, tough positions of some parties etc. But we should be patient and wise to solve all issues in the country’s interests”, said Andrian Candu.

In his words, in all the rest the Parliament has fulfilled all its tasks, “and has done even more than what it had planned”. For instance, the forum adopted the package of laws aimed at improving the situation in the banking sector and ratified documents necessary for starting the construction of the Ungheni-Chisinau gas pipeline “needed for strengthening Moldova’s energy security”.

The Parliament Speaker said the pipeline building will be started already in the current month.
