THE WEST SUPPORTED AND WILL BE FURTHER SUPPORTING INCUMBENT MOLDOVAN AUTHORITIES – SOCIALIST MP

14 august, 2018

The West as a whole has supported until now and will be further supporting the incumbent authorities in Moldova, “and the European Union and the United States are simply playing the roles of a bad and a good cop”, believes economist Vladimir Golovatiuc, Soc., a Member of the parliamentary Standing Committee for Economy, Budget and Finance.

Writing in the Facebook on Monday, he cast doubt on the assertion that the freezing by the European Commission of the 100-million-euro macro-financial assistance should allegedly mean the West’s refusal to support the current Moldovan authorities.

“Yes, at the end of June the European Union refused to furnish the financial assistance, which the Moldovan Government had projected for this year’s State Budget (namely 60 million euros as a credit and 40 million euros as a grant). But already in that very June, the International Monetary Fund and World Bank structures highly assessed certain reforms in Moldova and furnished credits and grants. As a result, already by the end of June Chisinau received US$22.5 million and in July -- US$40 million”, wrote the economist.

Golovatiuc underscored that 2018 is a pre-election year, so the authorities are doing and will be further doing their utmost to appear write in the voters’ eyes so that to win their sympathies – through raising salaries and social allowances, through repairing roads and schools, “but all this needs money”.

The Socialist parliamentarian remarked that the country’s 2018 State Budget consists of foreign credits and grants by 30%.

“Accordingly, any non-coming of money is fraught with non-fulfillment of the Budget, including of its social expenditures, which circumstance is extremely dangerous ahead of the elections! But let’s return to facts. The National Bank of Moldova monthly publishes information about arriving foreign credits and grants. Thus, in January-July 2018, Chisinau received US$120 million against US$102 million a year before. It is noteworthy that 80% of this year’s foreign money came in June and July – US$96 million, or 8 times (!!!) more than in the equivalent two months in 2017”, wrote the Socialist MP.

Vladimir Golovatiuc made the following conclusion: “The assistance coming from the West, despite all its criticism against the incumbent authorities, is not at all falling. On the contrary, it is growing”.
