MOLDOVA’S SECESSION FROM CIS ENERGY COUNCIL WILL ONLY CAUSE NEW PROBLEMS WITH RUSSIA – PRESIDENT DODON

17 august, 2018

The pro-European Government of Moldova is again intending to sharpen relations with Russia by preparing to divorce the Electrical Energy Council of the Commonwealth of Independent States, President Igor Dodon stated in an interview with the “Politics Today” publication of Moscow.

Dodon reminded that Moldova has been a member of the important Council since 1992.

“And until now, nobody has ever prevented us from cooperation in the energy sphere with other countries, including Romania. Moreover, for many years Romania has been buying electricity from the Transnistrian region of Moldova”, said Igor Dodon.

In his words, he has no doubt that the incumbent Moldovan authorities are simply looking for a new pretext for sharpening relationship with Russia.

“This new step is pursuing at least two objectives. The first is domestic one: in the run-up to the parliamentary elections [February 24, 2019] it is necessary to create an atmosphere of strain in the society, to bring geopolitics back onto the agenda, and to push up the temperature of tension with Russia – to please our European unionists [pro-EU forces]. The second is an external objective: it is necessary to prove to Western curators that Moldova keeps marching the “correct course” for aggravation of tension in relations with Russia”, said Igor Dodon.

The President has resolutely condemned this new step being prepared by the Government because he believes it runs contrary to Moldova’s national interests i.e. against preserving and developing mutually beneficial relationships with both the West and the East.

The CIS Electrical Energy Council was founded in 1992. It is an inter-governmental body within the Commonwealth of Independent States. The important-most direction of its activities is creation of a common legal framework in the electrical energy field for CIS countries. Council members take joint coordinated measures to ensure a sustainable power supply for each of the country concerned. The Council consists of the countries’ energy ministers and heads of national electrical companies.

Nevertheless, the Moldovan Cabinet has already put up for public discussing the draft of a governmental Resolution on the country’s secession from the Agreement on Coordination of Relations between the CIS States in the Field of Electric Power Industry. The Resolution drafter, the Ministry of Economy and Infrastructure, maintains that the divorce decision is caused by the country’s desire to bring its legislation in harmony with European norms and standards, and that the departure is necessary for realization of the project of inter-linking the Moldovan and Romanian electric power networks.
